Auditing isn’t always number crunching…

Traveling is a major part of auditing. At some firms you may travel 30-80% of the year visiting various audit clients. While we, as auditors, don’t always get to travel to the most exotic places, we can occasionally get to go to some cities with some cool sites. I currently work of the firm’s non-profit clients that has several locations in Texas, one of which is in Waco, Texas. Waco is a fairly mid-size city with a population of approximately 132,000 people. It’s also home to the beautiful campus Baylor University, a large private school, known for its athletics and academic programs. But that’s not why I was excited to visit Waco.

In 2014, a home remodeling show aired on HGTV called “Fixer Upper.”  The show is hosted by a couple Chip and Joanne Gaines and is based in Waco, Texas. The show has gained popularity over the past couple of years which has expanded their business in the Waco area. In Season 3, the couple purchased a large property which housed two large silos and a factory in downtown Waco. Over the course of a year, the couple began renovating the Silo property creating an open air market, shop, bakery and office space. So of course, being a fan of the show, visiting the property was definitely on my bucket list. After we finished up the audit at the client, we had an opportunity to visit the Silo property. I have to say that I was a true tourist and took a ton of pictures and even brought a souvenir. So auditing doesn’t have to be boring and there are some perks that come with traveling. If you are ever in Waco, Texas, definitely go check out the Magnolia Market and Silos Bakery, it’s a pretty cool place. Check out some pictures below.  Ashley Vance - Auditor BKHM CPAs
